Human Dimensions and Economics of Conservation
Korongo People's Lion Initiative (KopeLion)
Korongoro People’s Lion Initiative (Kope Lion), based in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanaznia, fosters human-lion coexistence through participatory research and sustainable community-based conservation. The main objective of Korongo People’s Lion Initiative is to promote human-wildlife coexistence through research and the implementation of a sustainable, community-based conservation program. The initiative utilizes genetic sampling, GPS collars, camera traps, direct observation, and community input to actively manage lion populations in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I supervised and continued to build and strengthen the capacities of 18 local personnel, while establishing lines of communication and support with surrounding communities. Additionally, I organized and oversaw a large camera trap study that builds upon a 60-year data set regarding lions, which sought to understand the changes of lion population dynamics. Lastly, I aided in digital marketing, advertisement, and general communication with international supporters.
